Alaska youth poetry has long maintained a buzz in Alaskan poetry and arts circles.
For over 10 years now several Alaska Poetry League members have been conducting Slam/Performance Poetry workshops in Jr./High Schools, residential treatment centers, and other youth facilities statewide. It’s time to share with the world what many of us have known for a quite some time… Alaska’s youth are as powerful as they are
eloquent.

July 20th-24th BNAV will be traveling to San Francisco, CA, to represent Alaska at the 14th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival. Brave New Voices is a program of Youth SpeaksInc.

BRAVE NEW ALASKAN VOICES is Alaska’s first Youth Troupe of Poets. This community of writers, between the ages of 13-19, are from all across the great state of Alaska. Brave New Alaskan Voices has now partnered with the Palmer Arts Council to make travelling to this event possible. Coaches Trey “Freethought” Josey and Kima Hamilton are excited to have the opportunity to lead this team of young people into lyrical battle.

The 2011 BNV festival participants will also have access to workshops and panel discussions led by world renowned writers and educators. This year over 600 poets, from more than 50 cites across the U.S. and abroad are expected to participate in the festival and for the 1st time ALASKAN youth will be contributors in this global conversation.
